Walter Clough

Posted by nahetsblog on July 20, 2009

The story of Walter Clough is not a rare one for many students that attended one of NAHETS member schools. Walter graduated from the Oklahoma College of Construction and is working for APAC in Missouri making 35/hr. He is an operator, but also doing site plans and other duties. This isn’t Walter’s first HEO job since graduation, but it’s his first full time job. 35.00/hr is very impressive for anyone, however for Walter it’s…. well…you gotta know Walter. I asked him his secret to landing this job (Apac was one of his job leads in his original packet) almost a month ago. He walked onto the jobsite, filled out an application and was hired on the spot!!! That’s it! We always encourage our graduates to not be afraid to walk on a job site and speak with a foreman/site supervisor. These guys usually know what their immediate needs are before the corporate office does. Anyway, Walter has been encouraged to do this for quite some time….he finally did it and it’s finally paying off. Congratulations to Walter!

Heavy Equipment Operation Now a Specialized Education

Posted by nahets on March 20, 2008

NAHETS came in contact with Robin Salisian at Construction Crossing in November 2007. Resulting from this contact came the article from NAHETS Executive Director, Matt Klabacka, “Non-Traditional Education For Today’s Web 2.0 Consumer.”

After a successful initial contact, in February 2008 NAHETS came in contact with Construction Crossing once again. In talking with Robin Salisian at Construction Crossing and Mary Waldron at Education Crossing, we were able to write another article, “Heavy Equipment Operation Now a Specialized Education.” This article focuses on the specialization of NAHETS heavy equipment and crane operator education . . .

Today, education exists largely because one thing–specialization. Every educational institution has programs and degrees focusing on certain areas of expertise; this specialized education allows individuals to excel in fields of their choice, thus helping society as a whole.

Until recently, the process of training heavy equipment operators lacked the degree of specialization found in other career specific training . . . see article

New Corporate Website–NAHETS.org–Unveiled

Posted by nahets on March 11, 2008

dotorgblog.jpgThe National Association of Heavy Equipment Training Schools (NAHETS) launched its new corporate website–www.NAHETS.org–on February 28, 2008. Unique from the existing NAHETS sites, NAHETS.org is an information-based site that focuses solely on sharing relevant company information and industry news with an expanded audience–partners, industry companies and associations, and employers.

What is the purpose NAHETS.org?

Already with a universal site (www.NAHETS.com), a leading job placement site (www.yellowmetalusa.com), and program and curriculum-based sites (www.heavy-equipment-school.com & www.yellowmetalbootcamp.com), NAHETS discerned the need for a website that was filtered to the business relationships of the heavy equipment industry. NAHETS.org is unique because its primary purpose is to communicate to industry companies, partners, and employers, instead of primarily towards students as other NAHETS sites.

Central to NAHETS.org is that it avoids the heavy traffic from students while maintaining a credible reputation for the industry. Although the NAHETS.com site is a more “all-inclusive” site, its heavy focus on students can detract from the experience of those not looking to attend the schools; i.e., partners, employers, and industry associations. NAHETS.org maintains enough design and information to be useful to students, but mostly meets the demands of non-student visitors by focusing on relevant content for NAHETS and the heavy equipment and construction industries.

Where did it come from? Who was involved? How long did it take?

The concept of “employers vs. students,” or in other words, the idea of website communication to the business relations of NAHETS, in addition to students, has been a goal of Executive Director, Matt Klabacka, since he founded NAHETS in 2005. After various evolutions of the main NAHETS.com site, Klabacka realized that one site, by itself, was not enough to create the desired student and business relationships. After discussing the matter with NAHETS personnel, Klabacka launched the NAHETS.org undertaking.

With ideas coming from Klabacka and other personnel, including Mike Martens (Director of Operations), Rhett Nielson (Creative Director), and Brian Thornton (Technology and Marketing Director), Klabacka turned the creation of the site over to Mike Wille, Internet Manager. Wille spent months designing and testing the site before its February 2008 take off.

What are its features?

Wille created the site using a modern design scheme, making it compatible with the appearance of related industry sites. NAHETS.org also incorporates the latest in website technology:

  • Cold Fusion to power the website with the most current information and news from a database
  • Video Streaming in the “Schools” and “Videos” sections
  • RSS Feed from the company and video blogs to the “News” section of the website

Just the beginning

This release of NAHETS.org is just the beginning. The site is designed to continually grow with updated company and industry information and news. We invite everyone to come back and visit the site frequently, as well as pass the word along to family, friends, employers, etc.

Mammoet, USA Crane Division Hires First Ever Female from NAHETS Oklahoma Campus

Posted by nahets on February 19, 2008

Scotty Gecks, Director of Training Services for Oklahoma College of Construction (OCC), relates a graduate success story.

Attitude–A little word that makes a big difference. Monique Lammers came to our school not knowing if her finances would clear. It was nip and tuck at first. During this time of uncertainty she kept her eye on the prize. She enrolled in our Mobile Crane Program determined that whatever the outcome she wanted all the knowledge she could get. Her determination, positive attitude, and quiet confidence caught everyone’s attention. She had a full head of steam when the good news came about her finances and had already set the bar for her classmates. She had some construction experience, but she came here wanting something more . . . a lot more. When she saw the brochure and video from Mammoet Heavy Lift and Transport, she knew. That was it. That was the something more she wanted . . .

Monique Lammers

The more she progressed through the program, the more determined she became to work for Mammoet. It was during the last week of her training that Doug Allen from Mammoet called. He was in Hawaii and was inquiring about another graduate who had applied and I mentioned I had a “good one” coming up that was wanting to work for Mammoet. I knew Mammoet doesn’t hire until grads have their CCO, but he became interested in Monique. Before the conversation ended, he asked if I would have her call him. They had a phone interview and the next day he called and made her an offer. She accepted. Monique graduated Outstanding Mobile Crane student and has passed and received her CCO Certification. She is the first female hired in the Crane Division of Mammoet, USA!

See Blog Post “Mammoet North America Interested in OCC Campus Graduates” for background on Mammoet and OCC.

The Oklahoma College of Construction is a member school of the National Association of Heavy Equipment Training Schools (NAHETS).

Heavy Equipment Goes Multimedia with NAHETS Video Distribution

Posted by nahets on October 22, 2007

Since early 2007, the National Association of Heavy Equipment Training Schools (NAHETS) has been filming, editing, and distributing videos on heavy equipment throughout the world-wide web. Now that nearly 100 videos are distributed, people from the industry to the general public viewer can become more familiar, knowledgeable, and aware of the different kinds of heavy equipment and about the association that trains and educates people to operate that equipment—NAHETS.

NAHETS heavy equipment videos are found on almost every video distribution site on the web; however, there is a main video catalog where videos are listed and organized. Here you will find videos that profile various kinds of heavy equipment: backhoes, cranes, excavators, wheel loaders, and more. Some videos show student testimonials that explain their experience in attending NAHETS schools. Other videos talk about safety, job placement assistance, how to get started in becoming a heavy equipment operator. Complementary to the videos are links to related sites and an RSS feed for industry-related news.

In addition to the video catalog, internet users can type in keywords such as, “heavy equipment school” and “nahets,” to find videos on various distribution sites. You will also find other videos at NAHETS.com.

As to the purpose and mission behind heavy equipment video distribution for NAHETS, Matt Klabacka, executive director, said the following:

When it comes to learning and becoming familiar with a concept—especially heavy equipment operating—people always learn better when they can see something visual. It enhances the learning process. This is why NAHETS has visually-oriented websites and uses simulators in heavy equipment training. This is also why NAHETS is dedicated to distributing videos on the heavy equipment operating industry throughout the internet. Some may think it is not a bid deal, but there are people out there who will benefit greatly—from seeing—what heavy equipment operators do and where they can go in order to become heavy equipment operators.

The National Association of Heavy Equipment Training Schools (NAHETS) officially started in 2006. Its mission is to train, educate, certify, and provide job placement assistance for those aspiring to become heavy equipment operators. There are currently five NAHETS member schools and colleges across the country that have been in operation both before and after NAHETS was founded. These schools and colleges are united in providing the most skilled entry-level heavy equipment operators for the construction and heavy equipment industries.
