Save on Construction Equipment just announced the launch of its new website, saveonheavyequipment.com. The new site, powered by Ebay, is to offer “pre-owned heavy equipment, available online for discount prices.” Users can bid on heavy equipment regularly (Backhoe Loaders, Crawler Dozers & Loaders, Trailers, Asphalt & Concrete Pavers, Lifts, Graders, Cranes, Excavators, Wheel Loaders, Stump Grinders, Wood Chippers, etc.). In addition, there are also attachments, parts, and even manuals available to buy. There is the “bid option” and also a “buy now” option for some of the products. Click here for the original press release.
Although online auctions may not appear to be the best way to sell/purchase heavy equipment and parts, some have found it efficient and had good success. The city of Cottage Grove, MN has found that they get better trade in value through selling used equipment on Ebay than through local auctions. The city management analyst, Brian Voelker, states that they can get 200-300 users from across the United States by listing items on Ebay, compared to roughly 20 users at local auctions. Click here for the full story.
With e-commerce steadily increasing across the globe, it is vital for businesses to offer products and services online, even in the heavy equipment industry. With sites such as Save on Heavy Equipment, as well as others, you might just find the equipments or attachments you are looking for–at a competitive price!

Some big time heavy equipment companies are making some promising investments. Deere (DE) is raising dividends, expanding stock buyback, and investing on worldwide demands. Caterpillar (CAT) allies with Navistar International (NAVZ) to build commercial trucks and forecasts big profit. Oskhosh (OSK) is close to a breakthrough on the military Humvee. But despite these growths, stocks are still trading well below their highs for this year . . .

DUETZ, a leading independent gas and diesel engine manufacturer, has developed a hybrid power unit for heavy equipment. DUETZ claims the new unit has the potential to reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%. The unit is not only designed to reduce fuel costs and consumption, but CO2 emissions as well.
Here are some of the main specs and functions:
- Mild hybrid drive unit
- DEUTZ four-cylinder diesel engine, electric motor, lithium-ion battery pack, control unit
- Electrical system nominal 15kW output, peak capacity at 30kW
- Start and stop: automatic engine stop during idling phases, automatic engine start in the case of continued operation, the usual starter is omitted.
- Power boost: in the case the power peaks, the electric unit is cut in.
- Battery charging: if the diesel engine has excess power, the electric unit can charge the battery while operating as a generator.
- Recuperation: part of the braking energy is refed into the battery by the electric unit

The new hybrid drive was developed with Heinzmann, a notable manufacturer of engine control systems and long-term DEUTZ partner and supplier. DEUTZ engines are commonly used in excavators, wheel loaders, access platforms, compactors, cranes, crushers, screeners, compressors, lift trucks, tractors, ride-on mowers, chippers, shredders, gensets and other off-highway mobile plant.

The Associated Builders & Contractors, Inc. (ABC) held their annual Construction Education Conference this last May 7th through May 9th in Las Vegas, NV.
For the second year NAHETS was represented at this event, which concentrated on specific training and education topics for construction owners, managers, and professionals. Additionally the nation-wide network of ABC chapters engaged in workshops and discussions focusing on the need to better educate America’s construction workforce.
As an element of this discussion NAHETS Mike Martens was able to present to the conference attendees the benefits of hiring the graduates from the five NAHETS schools located in California, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Georgia. The conference participants were pleased to discover that NAHETS graduates are not only trained in the actual equipment operations but are also required to adhere to strict safety requirements and recognize the importance of teamwork and work ethics.
NAHETS has also been asked to consider joining the official ABC training team, specifically to assist with providing training material to the local ABC chapters. NAHETS Executive Director Matt Klabacka has given his approval to continue this discussion hoping to come to a formal agreement with ABC later this year.
The 2009 ABC Construction Education Conference will be held next February 25 – March 1 and NAHETS will be there.

Scotty Gecks, Director of Training Services for Oklahoma College of Construction (OCC), relates a graduate success story.
Attitude–A little word that makes a big difference. Monique Lammers came to our school not knowing if her finances would clear. It was nip and tuck at first. During this time of uncertainty she kept her eye on the prize. She enrolled in our Mobile Crane Program determined that whatever the outcome she wanted all the knowledge she could get. Her determination, positive attitude, and quiet confidence caught everyone’s attention. She had a full head of steam when the good news came about her finances and had already set the bar for her classmates. She had some construction experience, but she came here wanting something more . . . a lot more. When she saw the brochure and video from Mammoet Heavy Lift and Transport, she knew. That was it. That was the something more she wanted . . .
The more she progressed through the program, the more determined she became to work for Mammoet. It was during the last week of her training that Doug Allen from Mammoet called. He was in Hawaii and was inquiring about another graduate who had applied and I mentioned I had a “good one” coming up that was wanting to work for Mammoet. I knew Mammoet doesn’t hire until grads have their CCO, but he became interested in Monique. Before the conversation ended, he asked if I would have her call him. They had a phone interview and the next day he called and made her an offer. She accepted. Monique graduated Outstanding Mobile Crane student and has passed and received her CCO Certification. She is the first female hired in the Crane Division of Mammoet, USA!
See Blog Post “Mammoet North America Interested in OCC Campus Graduates” for background on Mammoet and OCC.
The Oklahoma College of Construction is a member school of the National Association of Heavy Equipment Training Schools (NAHETS).

Help is on the way for the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, but not in its usual form. This time “help” is the “JCB High Mobility Engineer Excavator (HMEE),” a.k.a. the “world’s fastest backhoe loader.” I like to think of it as the “Batmobile of Heavy Equipment.” Its speed, mobility, and design will improve the capabilities of field commanders in front patrols. See batmobile of heavy equipment for the original article. See website directly below for video and other multi-media HMEE resources.
A few highlights of the article:
- The HMEE travels up to 60 mph on paved roads and cross country surfaces
- Full suspension and ABS brakes
- Computer diagnostics
- Run-flat tires and roll-over protection
- 17.55 tons with armor and 15.75 tons without armor
- 6.7-liter diesel
- Lifts 2.2 tons, digs 13 ft deep
- Provide battlefield commanders more capabilities in front patrols
- Increase Mobility and counter-mobility
- Provide water and supplies, build burms, lay electrical lines, etc.
JCB Construction Equipment is the creator of the HMEE. It was 4 years in the making and built specifically for the U.S. Military. JCB is the world’s largest privately owned construction business.
Here is a brief video about some other JCB military equipment.
